My mom is selfless, doesn't mince words, believes in the little guy... she's also trustworthy, honest, passionate, and hilarious (in her own way). I am who I am because she's one hell of an example.
We are products of our environments. Despite growing up with the knowledge that I have a biological father who wants nothing to do with me, my environment was full of unconditional love, support, and a belief we could do anything we set our minds to.
My (step)DAD was the leader of our house, but my mom set the tone. As a boy, who was coming to terms with what it means to not be "wanted" this is exactly what I needed. I needed to know the unbreakable bond between my mom and I would be reinforced with the love of a man deserving of my admiration. Far from a perfect situation, we made it work.
My mom has always had my back. Through the highs, the lows, the successes, and the disappointments, I've never felt anything but love. It is so much easier being a kid who is trying to figure out this world when you are allowed to fail and disappoint without fear of losing the world's most precious resource; love.
My mother isn't my friend. She was/is my partner, guide, and equal collaborator in this life of mine. For her, it wasn't about discipline. Instead, it was about a learning experience. And how I learned... how I experienced. Looking back, I couldn't be more thankful for the method. More than anything, I am appreciative of the love.
Thanks for entering my world,
-Nathan
