My 2019 Album of the Year is the self-titled entry from Better Oblivion Community Center. Together, Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers have created a collection of songs that is both observational and painfully aware of the little things in life. Buried within each track, is an attempt to name little details often missed by the casual observer. You, as the listener, are left to wrestle with the discovery and ponder how you would feel if you found yourself in the same delicately created scene.
Released in January of last year, I found myself returning to this album repeatedly as it played the soundtrack to the decisions and transition points before me. In the end, I think that is what great albums should be. They should offer relief, an opportunity to discover something about yourself, and a lifeline. Without a doubt in my mind, “Better Oblivion Community Center” accomplishes this better than almost any other release of 2019. If you find yourself lost, searching, or needing a reset, I can’t recommend it enough.
Be good to each other,
-Nathan
