At the center of every album is a musical thesis. “The ’59 Sound” by The Gaslight Anthem is quintessential New Jersey or at least everything we’ve come to expect from the Garden State. While the band has grown tired of the comparison, it is hard not to listen to their music and draw a comparison to Bruce Springsteen. Both represent a raw, gritty, and real sound. Together, they are the New Jersey Sound. The Gaslight Anthem has a heaviness to them though, something not even “The Boss” can accomplish. They sound like a firing engine with every piston turning and humming down the turnpike for which their home state is known. I can vividly picture in mind speeding north toward New York City with this album on full blast taking in each song’s story and applying it to my own life; something both of my favorite bands excel at and something I have grown to appreciate.
Be good to each other,
