"Calvary" is a heavy movie carrying the weight of a people who cannot and do not deserved to be saved. Focused on a priest in a small Irish village, the brilliant lead, Brendan Gleeson shines as he confronts his fellow citizens and their sins. Faith is running short and the sins of the past have a way of revisiting us all. Gleeson finds himself paying for those transgressions even though they are not his own. This quiet and dark picture keeps you connected until the very end, when you are confronted with your own guilt and doubt. It was refreshing to encounter a movie ending, where we the audience, didn't get the ending we wanted, rather we got what we deserved. More films should be this brave.
