Cinephile No. 770 “2019 Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts”

Recommendation: 4/5 Stars, SHOWTIME

Over the last couple of years when attempting to review the films nominated for Live Action Shorts, I have tried to provide a brief review of each film. This year, I am taking a different approach and reviewing the film I thought was most deserving of the Oscar, “One Small Step.”

Directors: Andrew Chesworth, Bobby Pontillas, Writers: Andrew Chesworth, Boby Pontillas

Plot: “TAIKO Studios presents the story of Luna, a Chinese American girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut.” -IMDB

Review: It is my sincere hope that every child in this world knows unconditional love and unwavering support from the adults in their lives. News reports, stories, and friends tell me otherwise. This breaks my heart because every child deserves the childhood I had.

President of the United States, scientist, marine biologist, meteorologist, theater actor, broadcaster, and fundraiser are just some of the things I wanted to be when I grew up. Not once did my parents ever tell me no. They may have mentioned that hard work would be required, but they impressed upon me from an early age a belief that I could accomplish anything.

“One Small Step” is about one of those guardians who supports the boundless imagination of the child in his life as she dreams of shooting for the stars in a rocket ship. When she fails, he is there. When she succeeds, he is there. When she loses patience, he is there. When she achieves, it is his perseverance that reminds us of what it means to nurture those you love.

In a world where kids are bullied both inside and outside the classroom, this film is important. For some kids, it may be the only example they ever see of support. For that, it should be seen by kids and adults alike.

Be good to each other,

-Nathan
