Recommendation: 4/5 Stars, SHOWTIME

Review: I have been waiting for over a decade for an “Avengers” film with the emotional weight that could act as a counterbalance to the humor and epic CGI battles that seem to engross Marvel films. In this final iteration of one of the most ambitious cinematic projects ever created, I finally got what I wanted. From the very beginning, as we watch Tony Stark hopelessly float through space without the prospect of hope, until the closing moments, this film delivers on a level of emotional maturity that I have been clamoring for since the very beginning.

Following the cataclysmic events of “Avengers: Infinity War,” it is pretty apparent the only way to reverse the impact of Thanos’ snap is to travel back in time. Thanks to likes of characters like Ant-Man, Hulk, and a Tony Stark, who needs some convincing, the impossible is possible. Understanding this section of the film is nearly impossible. In a lot of ways, it reminded me of “Interstellar.” Both are engrossing films, but you would need a Ph.D. in quantum physics to understand it all. The writers of this film are hoping you won’t get bogged down in the details. It is a necessary step as our heroes prepare for the fight of their lives.

Bringing the team back together in an effort to fan out across the galaxy to acquire the Infinity Stones before Thanos does is the prime directive. Of course, Thanos gets lucky thanks to some familial betrayal and catches wind of the plan. Still, the Avengers have the stones are all in one place again, but not without some sacrifice. Then, it becomes a matter of who is strong enough to withstand the pain of snapping life back into existence.

This sets the scene for one of the most epic final battles ever captured on film. I won’t spoil too much, but as all the Avengers assemble for one final showdown with their archnemesis it was hard to not get emotionally involved. As the fight lingers on, it becomes obvious that someone will have to give of themselves fully to save all of humanity. That’s where I’ll stop, but it is here that Marvel’s efforts were finally able to stand on the same field with the likes of Christopher Nolan’s Batman films.
