10 Questions Answered (2019): Stephanie Jensen

1. Can you name something you did that people called you crazy for attempting?

Moving to Minnesota to be with the man I love. To clarify, everyone who said I was crazy was referencing the weather here, not the man. And it was usually followed by a "You're so brave" or an "I could never do that". It's been a hell of an almost-year, and "crazy" probably describes it well. So does "right".

2.       When was the last time you were really proud of your country?

As a collective? When we elected former president Barack Obama in 2008. I didn't see that coming.

3.       How do you define patriotism?

"You're not supposed to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who says it."--Malcolm X. To me, patriotism is a deep love and respect for your country. Enough to call it out and hold it accountable when it's less than reaching its stated ideals.

4.       Do you donate to charity? Why or why not?

I do, depending on my finances. For me, I prefer to donate to friends or people I know in their endeavors. So if I have a friend raising money for suicide awareness or sex trafficking, I want to help them. I know them and know their intentions, and I love the idea of my money helping both a greater good and someone I care about.

5.       Can you define what it means to be financially comfortable?

To be able to pay my bills with enough left over that an oil change isn't a burden. I have a home and transportation and food; I'm beyond fortunate.

6.       What characteristics define a great President of the United States?

The ability to delegate tasks to their cabinet. Good communication. Courage. A sense of personal accountability. A sense of diplomacy and reason.

7.       Have you ever experienced the presence of God? If so, can you describe it?

Every time I'm underwater.

8.       Can you name something another country does really well that you wish we did here?

Australia and New Zealand's approach to gun control makes us look like a paranoid militia.

9.       Sitting at a funeral, what do you think about?

How a life is supposed to be comprised of a service, and then we all leave. How short of a time we're all here, in the grand scheme of things. And I'm actively trying not to sob, because I cry so easily at funerals and weddings.

10.   Sitting at a wedding, what do you think about?

I wonder why the hell I'm crying, when I don't even care for weddings. I hope good things for the couple and I look around to see the beautiful things other women are wearing so I have ideas for next time.
