Musical Thesis: Slowmotions “The Domes”

At the center of every album is a musical thesis, and that concept is no different for Slowmotions and their album, “The Domes.” Now, I am no expert on music. I can’t describe the nuances behind a chord progression, pitch, and/or arrangement. With that said, I know what I like, and I choose to write about how it makes me feel. In this album, I do celebrate the unorthodox song arrangements. As listeners of popular music, we’ve become conditioned to expect a song between 3 and 4 minutes. Songs should have clear verses and choruses. They should take you from point A to B and never meander far from that path. This album doesn’t follow the formula of most pop songs and for that, I believe it is worth celebrating.

Secondly, this album is a celebration of what it means to let your heart lead. For most of us, I think we view our minds split into two. On one side, is the rational/factual decision maker. On the other side, is the emotional/passionate decision maker. Here is where the heart lies. We often allow the heart to influence the mind, but we give the final say to rationality. For me, this album is defending those who make decisions based on passion and love. The decisions we make with this side of our brain may not be the wisest, but they come from a place of pure love.

Finally, this collection speaks of a desire to be remembered. In the work we do, people we surround ourselves, and the love we give, we hope to leave a legacy. For the clear majority of us, the annals of history won’t speak our names. The best we do is hope to impact the lives of those around us. The name might not be remembered but the impact can ring for eternity. Instead of wanting to be remembered, we should strive to be a mere ripple in an ever-expanding pool colliding with positive ripples added by those working to do the same.
