Cinephile No. 558 "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot"

The war in Afghanistan was forgotten by the American public. "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" attempts to make us remember. To accomplish this feat, the director and writers show us war through the eyes of a journalist played brilliantly by Tina Fey. Mrs. Fey is both hilarious and endearing as she pushes back from the newsroom desk, embraces her midlife crisis, and travels half way around the world to discover both herself and some sense of truth. As she does, we see a war most of us forgot. We see violence. We see Marines in the midst of combat. We see war. We see a society coming to terms with a new reality. If this film stands as a beginning for Afghanistan War films to come, then I welcome them with a curious and respectful heart.

Be good to each other,
