Cinephile No. 554 “Carol”
The dissatisfaction you feel with a story like "Carol" is precisely why you should see movies like it. This movie is a wonderful representation of how far we have come as a society. As I watched, I was shocked by the comments made about people with a sexual identity outside the “norm.” I sat in amazement at the way people treated Carol for being attracted to someone of the same sex. I felt anxious for a mother who had to decide between her child and who she is at her core. As dissatisfied as I was with each one of these scenarios, it dawned on me that this movie was meant to be a rear view mirror providing an opportunity for us to view the progress we’ve made. It also serves as a windshield from which we can see where we are to go next. For this reason and many others, I recommend “Carol.”
Be good to each other,
