“While We’re Young” is a fascinating film about the clash of generations and the meeting of authenticity versus opportunism. Now, as far as reviews go, I realize that is a mouth full, but let me provide some context. This film takes place in Brooklyn; the birthplace of gentrification. It focuses on a couple in their 40’s who find themselves stuck in a rut when they encounter a younger couple in their 20’s. The younger couple is carefree, appreciative of things that came before and focused on the now. A friendship blossoms between the two and the challenge of the movie is born. On one hand, as we age authenticity becomes so important. As aging adults, we’re expected to have a family, buy a house and become wholly focused on our children. For some, to push back against these expectations breathes of a lack of authenticity. On the other hand, as someone fresh out of college and at the cusp of your career, you are expected to do your time and learn from those who went before you. At the center of this movie, is a battle between these two sets of expectations. As a 31 year old single man, I found the battle all too familiar.
