Cinephile No. 522 “Southpaw”
"Southpaw" didn't feature a very unique plot, but the cinematography in the ring was worth the price of admission. In fact, you’ve seen this movie before. A boxer loses everything and is forced to start at the bottom. As we watch him swallow his pride, we also watch him rediscover his passion and in the long run, himself. This scenario plays out against the backdrop of a villain we could never root for and impossible odds. I won’t spoil the ending, but I will say the cinematography and the choreography make the movie. The punches seem real. They seem like they hurt. You feel them. This makes the battle so sweet even if you aren’t a boxing fan. It also makes this an enjoyable film even if you’ve seen this story before.
