Cinephile No. 493 “Woman in Gold”
Hitler stole more than lives. He stole culture, art, wealth, and dignity. “Woman in Gold” tells a powerful story of one woman’s journey to right an unforgiveable wrong. As she battles the Austrian government to have a priceless heirloom returned, we are confronted with a lifetime of tragedy. We are also reminded of the strength and endurance of the human spirit. We, as human beings, are capable of unspeakable brutality and evil. When mixed with ideology, the things we are capable of doing to each other is almost unfathomable. But, we are also capable of decency, goodness and an uncanny ability to right our wrongs. This movie shows our flaws, but it also reveals our greatest strength; the strength that makes this life worth living.
