Musical Thesis: The New Basement Tapes “Lost on the River”
At the center of every album is a musical thesis. The New Basement Tapes “Lost on the River” reminds me of the importance of Bob Dylan. In fact as I grow older, his songs and lyrics mean more and more to me. This, sadly, wasn’t always the case. I dismissed his work based on his delivery alone. As a 31 year old man, I’ve moved beyond his odd sound and fallen fully in love with the content. To listen to a group of artists tackle some of his lost songs and lyrics, only makes me appreciate the content even more. With each song, I am transported to Kansas City, a relationship or a particular moment in history. Many of the songs feel like an out-of-body experience. As they flash by, I am reminded of Mr. Dylan’s place in the pantheon of music, as well as the respect, understanding and care for the roots of folk/American music. This album is more than just a series of covers. No, it is a tip of the hat. It is a pause for respect.
Thanks for entering my world,
