Musical Thesis: Sturgill Simpson “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music”
At the center of every album is a musical thesis. Sturgill Simpson’s “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music” proudly proclaims, “THIS IS COUNTRY MUSIC.” For far too long, the lines between country and pop music have been blurred. Long gone are the days of the Highwaymen and the reign of Cash, Jennings, Nelson, and Kristofferson. This album possesses the power to restore order in Nashville and beyond. In fact, if more country artists follow suit, defectors like me could be lured back into the fold. Don’t be fooled though, this is still a new take on country music. This album is more than sad songs, beers, girls, death, and all of the other clichés we apply to the genre. It is a sampling of what works, has worked for a long time, and an effort toward what can work in the future. I, for one, am excited about the possibilities.
Thanks for entering my world,
