Cinephile No. 537 "Bridge of Spies"
Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg do a period piece better than most and you can add "Bridge of Spies" to their accomplished careers. The story here isn't complicated. In fact, you've probably seen it before. A regular man is plucked from obscurity and given a task which he seems unqualified, yet someone sees something in him that he does not realize. This narrative is a popular one not because of its truth, but because we see ourselves in the same position. We like to watch films with characters who lean on their moral convictions. We connect with people who will go to the ends of the earth for what is right. We like to think we are capable of the same strength. We could have been Tom Hanks in this movie if only we had been given the chance. We connect with these movies, because they are a mirror unto our country and ourselves. For this reason alone, "Bridge of Spies" is worth the price of admission.
Be good to each other,
