On A Stage
I have always found some strange comfort on a stage in front of complete strangers or close friends. To me, it is a rush of adrenaline unlike any high a drug could provide. It provides an opportunity to make people laugh and a venue to drive a serious point home.
Over the course of my life, I have acted in plays, performed as a tandem, read original writings, emceed events and helped orientate new students. Each opportunity provided a chance to take something I love, the written word, and perform.
As a younger man, I loved being in plays and skits. I loved making people laugh. My ego inflated as I was told after performances that I should make a living out of the stage. This translated into a desire to pursue a degree in theatre.
Once I arrived at UCO, I began doubting my talents. So, I switched my major to Broadcast Communication. Being in front of a camera reading the news and driving home important points was fulfilling, but again I doubted my ability to make a living out of it, as well as my ability to fulfill my need to make a difference.
So again, I switched my focus. Now, I am fixed on communications via nonprofit organizations. Here, I believe I can do the most good, but if I am honest I still miss the stage. I miss getting into character. I miss the sense of play. I miss becoming someone else and by doing so discovering a piece of myself. Maybe it is time to explore the world of community theatre...
Thanks for entering my world,
-Nathan
